Laundry 101 part III: Wash it out or hang it back up? When to launder what

by Kim

We’re continuing our laundry series (read part 1 here and part 2 here) with some helpful tips about when you should wash certain clothing or bedding items.

Hopefully it goes without saying, but if your clothing or bedding gets stained or dirty, wash it as soon as you can. Especially with stains, the sooner you can treat them, the less likely they are to set and ruin the material.

Keep in mind that this is by no means a definitive list. There’s a lot of conflicting information out there, so these are just suggestions we stitched together from resources like the American Cleaning Institute and Good Housekeeping, both of which have a lot of good information.

Every wear or use

  • Underwear and socks
  • Tights and leggings
  • T-shirts, tank tops and camisoles
  • Bathing suits
  • Wash cloths

Every 2-5 wears or uses

  • Pajamas (3-4 wears)
  • Bath towels (3-5 uses)
  • Bras (2-3 wears)
  • Dress shirts, dresses and dress pants (2-4 wears)
  • Jeans (3 wears)
  • Hand and dish towels (once a week or more often)
  • Sweaters (3-5 wears)

Every 2 weeks

  • Bed sheets (More often if you sweat a lot)

Once a month

  • Bath mats
  • Bathrobes
  • Throw blankets

Every 3-6 months

  • Outerwear
  • Comforters
  • Pillows
  • Throw rugs

Regardless if you’re washing items every day or every month, if your washer spins out of control or your dryer takes a tumble, Service Guard’s got you covered.
