The days are getting longer; the sun is shining brighter; and the snow has melted in most places (for now). There are signs of spring everywhere. And that means it’s time to take a serious look at your spring-cleaning to-do list.
We’ll help you tackle your tasks all season long by sharing a new set of tips and tricks each month to make sure your seasonal sweep is quick and effective.
Let’s start in the kitchen and deep-clean your dishwasher.
Get the grime off the filter
Find the removable filter on the bottom of your dishwasher and soak it in warm, soapy water for a few minutes to get off the dirt and grime. You may need to use an old toothbrush to work on the tough spots.
When things are looking spick and span, reinstall the filter.
Repeat the process every three to four months to keep things fresh.
Refresh the interior
There are a couple things you can do to clean the inside of your dishwasher.
First, try pouring a cup of vinegar in the bottom of the machine, close the door and run the dishwasher on a normal cycle.
Or if you’re feeling adventurous, you could instead try filling the detergent holder with Tang, Crystal Light or any other powdered citrus drink mix, and run the dishwasher on a normal cycle.
Inspect the spinning arm
There’s a spinning arm in the bottom of your dishwasher with little holes along the top. Make sure that the arm is clear of debris and that the holes aren’t clogged.
If you need to clean out crud, use a toothpick or Q-tip to get in to the tough-to-reach places.
Wipe down the door seal
You might be surprised to see how much build-up can collect around the dishwasher door. Mix together some vinegar and water and wipe down the door seal with a rag.
