Three ways to help your HVAC system survive the furry friend in your life

by Sarah

It’s hard to describe the joy of being greeted at the door after a long day of work by a four-legged, tail-wagging friend showing the kind of unconditional love that proves a pet really can be man’s (or woman’s) best friend.

We love our pets. And we’re here to help make sure your home is ready to handle some of the extra hair and dander that comes with being a pet parent.

Pet hair gets everywhere, including inside your HVAC system. Here are a few tips to make sure your system runs smoothly and efficiently, even with Shaggy in the house.

Good grooming

Make sure to regularly brush your pet’s coat to help with some of the shedding. Keeping your pet’s coat clean with regular baths will also help reduce the amount of dander or dirt they track in.

Dust busting

Even with good grooming, your pet will shed hair around the house. To help keep it out of your HVAC system, consider sweeping or vacuuming daily or every other day.

Filter checking

Most HVAC system filters need to be changed about every one to three months, but if you’re a pet owner, it’s likely one month at the most. Make sure to check your filter frequently to see if it’s clogged. Dirty filters not only hurt the air quality in your home, but also make your furnace work harder to push air through.

Duct cleaning

No matter how clean your house is, some dust, debris and pet hair will eventually accumulate in your duct work. If you have Service Guard, we can inspect your duct work the next time we’re there for an annual HVAC system maintenance check. Give us a call at 800-504-2000 for the peace of mind that your HVAC system is running smoothly, pet hair and all.
