Refrigerator

Want to avoid a costly refrigerator repair and save money on your energy bill? Here are a few simple tips for maintaining your fridge:

  • Keep an open container of baking soda in the refrigerator to remove odors and replace every 3 months
  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Clean dust and lint under and behind your refrigerator routinely

How is your refrigerator behaving?

Not cooling at all

  • If you’ve moved the refrigerator recently, check to make sure the plug didn’t come loose from the wall.
  • Check the circuit breaker in your home to make sure it wasn’t tripped.

Not cooling very well, not cool enough

  • Check that your temperature controls are on normal settings (check your manufacturer guide to see proper settings for your model).
  • Check the coils on the back of the refrigerator to make sure they are clean.
  • Check to make sure the door is closing properly.

Light in refrigerator/freezer not working

If the refrigerator/freezer unit is still running properly, check the light bulb to make sure it is still working and tighten, if necessary. You can buy bulbs from most hardware stores and some grocery stores.

Refrigerator is leaking water

If the refrigerator is only leaking on the inside, this is normal if the refrigerator is in a defrost cycle. However, if there is any ice build-up in the refrigerator section, schedule a repair.

Food is freezing in the refrigerator section

  • Check that your temperature controls are on normal settings (check your manufacturer guide to see proper settings for your model).
  • Check the coils on the back of the refrigerator to make sure they are clean.
